Police Department

The New Athens Police Department is headed by Chief of Police

Larry A. Kirk. The department has three full time officers, one School Resource Officer, and  five part-time officers.  The New Athens Police Department also sponsors an Explorer Post.  The Explorer Post has eight active members.

The School Resource Officer is on duty at the school Monday-Thursday, as well as during many school events.  He is specially trained to respond to juvenile problems and his salary is supported in part by the school district.

There is an officer on active patrol 24-hours a day.  Each full-time officer has their own patrol car that they take home with them.  This allows for a speedier response time in case of an emergency.  The New Athens Police Department has a mutual aid agreement with neighboring communities, which allows for additional police resources. All full-time officers of the NAPD live within the village limits and are active within the community.

Ambulance Service

Interior of one of the well equipped emergency units

The New Athens Ambulance Service provides emergency response and transportation to all residents of the New Athens Fire Protection District as well as the Village of New Athens.  These services are provided through a contract agreement between the Fire Protection District and the Village of New Athens.  The Fire Protection District levies a tax to offset a portion of the operating expenses, while the Village handles the day to day operation of the service.

Presently, the service has two emergency response vehicles that are manned by a group of 24 active volunteers.  All volunteers are fully trained, state certified,  Emergency Medical Technicians.  Additional training is provided on a continuous basis by personnel from the local hospitals.

Anyone interested in becoming a member of the New Athens Volunteer Ambulance should contact Mr. Mike Reed at 618-475-3700.

Advanced Life Support, (Paramedic) response is provided by Medstar Ambulance Service.  The New Athens Ambulance Service is in constant radio contact with Medstar as well as all local hospitals during any response.

Any question with billing should be directed to Shannon Hoffman at 618-475-2144.  All Emergency calls should dial 911.
