Sewer Department

The Village of New Athens owns and operates facilities for the collection and treatment of all domestic and industrial wastewater.  The treatment plant is located at 2515 River Road in New Athens.  The collection system consists of gravity lines and a series of three pump stations.  The service area of the collections system extends beyond the corporate boundaries.

The wastewater treatment plant has a design capacity of 300,000 gallons per day with a peak flow of 750,000 gallon per day.  The present average daily flow is 140,000 leaving adequate excess capacity available for industrial clients and future residential growth.

Billing Information

On or near the first day of each month, a bill will be delivered by first class mail, to all customers of the Department, for those services used during the preceding month. This bill will be due on receipt and may be paid by the 15th of the month following delivery of service without penalty.  This bill will become overdue on the 16th of the month following delivery of services, at which time a 10% penalty will be added to any outstanding balance.  Any customer with an outstanding balance on the 21st of the month following delivery of services, will be sent a “FINAL NOTICE PRIOR TO DISCONNECT”, by first class mail, to the address where the service is connected, indicating the last day to pay the bill prior to terminating services.  Any customer with an outstanding balance on the 28th of the month following deliver of services, will be terminated without further notice.  Any customer who has had their utility service terminated for non-payment, will be subject to re-connecting fees.

The amount due for sewer usage is determined from metered readings of actual water used during the period.

Residential in-town sewer tap-in inspection fees are $250.00.  This fee will provide for the inspection of the sewer tap made by the contractor provided to the property owner.  All labor and materials for the connection to the sewer are the responsibility of the property owner.  Out-of-town tap-in inspection fees are higher.

To apply for sewer service or to obtain additional information, please stop by the Village Hall, 905 Spotsylvania Street or call 618-475-2144 during normal business hours.
