General street repairs are handled by the New Athens
Public Works Department. Among those
duties assigned to the street department are pot hole repair, oil and chip
resurfacing, leaf removal and snow removal. Oil and Chip resurfacing The majority of the street within the Village are oil and chip surface over an aggregate
base. The oil and chip maintenance process is performed on an
annual basis during the first week of August of each year. Approximately one-half of all Village
streets are resurfaced each year. Truck Routes All truck traffic in excess of
18,000 lbs, should be confined to the designated truck routes, except for
local delivery. The following truck
routes have been established: Beginning at the intersection
of Van Buren Street and Benton Street, proceeding north on Van Buren Street
to Illinois Street, east on Illinois to Market Street, north on Market to its
terminus with North Street. Beginning at the intersection
of Van Buren Street and Benton Street, proceeding northeast on Benton Street
to Spotsylvania Street, east on Spotsylvania to East Street, north on East
Street to the intersection of East Street and Clinton Street, and Oakridge
Road with Oakridge Road being the end of the truck route. |
