TIPS |

How to make
compost- the basics. Remove grass and sod cover from the area where you
will construct your compost pile to allow materials direct contact with soil
microorganisms. The following recipe
for constructing your compost heap is recommended for best results: 1st layer– 3”-4”
of chopped brush or other coarse material on top of the soil surface allows
air circulation around the base of the heap. 2nd layer– 6”-*’
of mixed kitchen scraps, leaves, grass clippings, sawdust, etc. Materials should be sponge damp. 3rd layer– 1” of
soil serves as a inoculant by adding microorganisms to the heap. 4th layer-2”-3’
of manure or commercial fertilizer to provide the nitrogen needed by
microorganisms. Sprinkle lime, wood
ash, and/or rock phosphate over the layer of manure to reduce the heap’s
acidity. Add water if manure is dry. 5th layer– Repeat
steps 1-4 until the bin is almost full.
Top off the heap with a 4”-6” layer of straw, and scoop out a “basin”
at the top to catch rain water. A properly made heap will reach
temperature of 140-160 degrees in four to five days. After five to six weeks, fork the materials
into a new pile, turning the outside of the old heap into the center of the
new pile. Compost is ready in 4-5
months. |

Leaf Collection Throughout the fall season the
Village of New Athens provides leaf pick-up to its residents. With this process the Village of New Athens
has developed a plan for vacuuming the leaves and turning them into mulch. Residents living south of
railroad tracks, north of Spotsylvania and west of East Street will have
their leaves removed on each Monday.
All other residents will have their leaves removed on each Tuesday. The process will continue through the
season. In case of delays due to
weather, removal will be on the next available day. Leaves must be raked to the
street and not to the alleys.
Residents are asked to comply with the following or leaves will not be
removed: 1.
All leaves should be raked across
the ditch and into a long wind-row on the shoulder of the street. Do not rake them into a
pile. 2.
Do not place leaves in the ditch
line. This will cause problems in case
of rain. 3.
All large sticks, limbs papers,
bottles and other trash must be removed from leaf wind-row. 4.
If you have a curb in front of your residence, leaves should be placed
on the grass behind the curb and
not in the curb line or in the street. Snow Removal The Village of New Athens
provides snow removal as required during the winter season. During a winter storm event, snow removal
efforts are concentrated on the designated snow routes then on the minor
streets. The following streets are
designated “SNOW ROUTES”: Spotsylvania, Mill, Eastlawn, Belsha, Hanft, East
Street, Old Baldwin Road and Market Street.
In the event a winter storm emergency is declared, all vehicles parked
on a designated snow route will be ticketed or towed at the owners expense. |
